IPC Crimes Over the Years

Between 2016 and early 2022, India’s crime landscape showed notable fluctuations. Crime incidence rose steadily from 2016 to 2019, before surging sharply in 2020, largely attributed to pandemic-related reporting and enforcement changes.
Although the total number of cases declined to 36.6 lakh in 2021, levels remained higher than pre-pandemic averages, and early 2022 data indicated another gradual uptick.
The crime rate per lakh population followed a similar pattern, peaking at 314.3 in 2020 before moderating to around 270 in early 2022.
Meanwhile, the charge sheeting rate, which reflects the efficiency of police investigations, fell to 67.2% in 2019 but recovered to over 72% by 2022, suggesting improving post-pandemic law enforcement effectiveness.
